Harvey J Hair Maintenance

When your salon guests are investing their money in getting extensions, it is important to educate them on how to properly take care of their new look!

Brushing

When brushing your hair extensions, it is best to start at the bottom and work your way to the roots. This enables you to get all of the tangles out without creating more. Work in sections and only brush your hair when it is dry.

Washing

The less you wash your extensions, the better! At Harvey J Hair, we recommend going at least three days in between washes. If you can go longer then even better! Using dry shampoo in between wash days is a bonus. Before washing, make sure to brush your hair. When washing, you will want to shampoo at the roots only. If you are wearing multiple rows, make sure to lift up each row to thoroughly wash the row underneath it. Massaging the scalp to get it nice and clean. Rinse your shampoo and then follow with a conditioner only on the ends. Let the conditioner sit for 3-5 minutes then rinse. You can also use a deep conditioner once a week if desired.

Styling

The fewer products you use on your hair, the better. After washing, let your hair air dry until it is fairly dry, about 80% dry. Apply a leave-in oil that has a heat protectant in it to the mids and ends of your hair and blow-dry your hair smooth. It is recommended to wear your hair straight for a day and then add curls the following days if desired. This is to help with blending. On days that you don’t wash your hair, applying the oil one to two times a day is needed. Human hair extensions don’t produce their own oil, so adding oil is a must.

Sleeping

Yep, that’s right. You even have to think about your hair extensions when you sleep! When you are getting ready for bed, put your hair in a loose bun on top of your head. This will also help with keeping your curls fresh for next-day styling. You can also put your hair into two braids on either side of your head.

Swimming/Vacationing

When swimming, or really doing anything outside, you should be wearing sunblock. Find a sunblock that is mineral-based that uses titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide. Wearing your hair up is best, but if you must wear it down, finding this type of sunscreen will ensure your extensions don’t turn a funky color. Before swimming, get your hair damp and apply a conditioner to your hair then braid your hair. Wait until you are all done swimming to rinse out the conditioner. If you find yourself in a sweet convertible, just make sure to secure your hair to avoid a tangled mess.

Coloring

Coloring our hand tied wefts is possible only if done by a licensed professional. Only use demi-permanent hair color when coloring hair extensions.
